DETERMINATION
The Tribunal member upholds the Minister of Transport’s decision not to renew the applicant’s category 3 medical certificate.
REASONS FOR THE DETERMINATION
Refusal to renew a category 3 aviation medical certificate — The evidence presented at the review hearing showed two different opinions – major depression or burnout. The Tribunal member retained the diagnosis of major depression as provided by the applicant’s attending physician in January 2000. While major depression is an illness that is subject to relapse, the use of SSRIs decreases the rate and often prevents manic or hypomanic episodes or even panic or anxiety conditions. The applicant is presently not taking any SSRIs (Effexor) for the last four months. Given the current status of the matter, the Tribunal member is not in a position to determine this issue and it will be up to the competent authorities to do so when a new request for certification is made. The Tribunal member upholds the Minister of Transport’s decision not to renew the applicant’s category 3 medical certificate.
